The difference between rest and numbing

Scrolling and sleeping aren't the same as recovering. Here's how to tell which one you actually need.

Scrolling for two hours and calling it rest is a common substitution — it feels like downtime, but it rarely leaves you feeling recovered. That gap between the two is worth paying attention to.

A simple test

After the activity, do you feel more present or less? Rest tends to leave you clearer and a little more yourself. Numbing tends to leave you flatter, or reaching for the next distraction.

Building in real rest

Real rest usually involves some kind of presence — a walk without your phone, a conversation with no agenda, time spent on something with no productivity attached to it at all.

Rest looks different for everyone

There’s no universal list of restorative activities. For one person it’s an hour alone with no phone; for another it’s time with people who ask nothing of them. The through-line isn’t the activity — it’s whether you come out of it steadier than you went in.

Worth checking every so often: has your version of rest quietly turned into another form of avoidance? The same activity can be either, depending on what it’s doing for you that week.

Take the first step toward feeling like yourself again.

No commitment. Most people hear back the same day.
